Fortis Hospital Ludhiana to spread awareness on timely detection & prevention of Cancer on World Cancer Day

 Doctors at Fortis Hospital Ludhiana have emphasized the importance to understand Cancer, the key symptoms and early warning signs, facts and trends and ways to prevent some types of cancers. The Hospital firmly believes that the public at large needs to know more about incidence of cancers so that they are equipped with the knowledge to battle it and adopt healthier lifestyle approaches to emerge victorious.

 Dr J. S. Sekhon, Director  Oncology, Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana said,“ Among various diseases that affect humanity, Cancer – one of the most unpredictable and complex of all non-communicable diseases – has emerged as a major threat. Today, Cancer is among one of the major causes of death globally, with approximately 14 million new cases and 8.2 million cancer-related deaths reported.”

 In India, cancer is one of the top causes of death after cardiovascular diseases, accounting for 7% of Indian mortality, with numbers rising steadily since last few years. In 2004, 0.26 million people died of cancer and 0.82 million people were living with the disease. Those numbers had more than doubled by 2012 with 0.7 million people dying of cancer and 1.8 million living with it in 2012. According to a special research paper on cancer in India published in Lancet Oncology journal, these numbers may almost double to 17 lakh new patients and 12 lakh deaths per annum by 2035.

At Fortis Ludhiana, event was organised on World Cancer Day, 4th February wherein the oncology team imparted knowledge to the patients as well as their attendants regarding the signs and symptoms to watch out for in cancer. Dr Harish Matta, General & Oncology Surgeon, informed about breast cancer, its signs and how to detect at an early stage and effectiveness of surgical management in reducing the risks involved. Dr Parveen Kaur, Radiation Oncologist, talked about different radiation treatment techniques and their efficacy. Along with the imparting knowledge, fun games were played and a cake was cut with the patients and the doctors who participated in the event.
