22-Year-Old-Young Old Girl gets a second life post successful liver and kidney transplant surgery at Fortis Hospital Mulund, Mumbai

Fortis Hospital Mulund performed a liver and kidney transplant on a 22-year-old girl suffering from primary hyperoxaluria.  In this condition, the liver lacks some enzymes which lead to high oxalate levels in the blood which forms kidney stones and leads to kidney failure. Only kidney transplants in such patients will lead to repeated kidney failure, whereas combined liver and kidney transplants will cure this condition. The girl had been facing kidney failure for the past 1.5 years and needed an urgent transplant. She is a resident of Nagpur, but her family shifted to Mumbai with her due to her medical condition and in the hope of a transplant.

She was donated the liver and kidney by a 36-year-old deceased donor from Ulhasnagar. The donor was a road accident victim, who suffered severe injuries on his body, including his head and was brought to Fortis Hospital Mulund on September 7. He was under treatment for four days, but due to his grievous injuries, his health deteriorated, and he was declared brain dead.  His family came forward to donate his organs to save the life of other patients.

His liver and two kidneys, pancreas and cornea were retrieved. While one liver and kidney were donated to the patient at Fortis Hospital, another kidney and pancreas were given to Global Hospital, and the cornea was donated to K B H Bachooali Charitable Ophthalmic & ENT Hospital.

The girl is under observation post-surgery care at Fortis Hospital Mulund. The organs were retrieved by Dr. Kapildev Yadav, Consultant, Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery, and Dr Saurabh Patil, Consultant, Urology & Robotic Surgery, at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. Also, the organ transplant surgery was conducted by Dr Gaurav Gupta, Senior Consultant & Chief Surgeon - Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery, Fortis Hospital Mulund and Dr Saurabh Patil, Consultant, Urology & Robotic Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Mulund.
