5 th Interstate Lifesaving Heart Transplant Conducted at Fortis Hospital, Mulund

Mumbai witnessed 13th heart transplant as 16yr old male received a heart at Fortis Hospital, Mulund early morning today. The recipient from Latur, received the heart from 22yr old male donor, admitted at Mahavir Hospital in Surat, after he was declared brain dead following a head injury during a road traffic accident. The recipient was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy and had been waitlisted for over a month to receive a heart. Post assessment and evaluation, Dr. Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund retrieved the heart from the donor at Mahavir Hospital, Surat and transported it to Fortis Hospital Mulund, in 1hr 19mins covering distance of 269kms across state lines.  

The courageous family of the donor consented for donation of Heart, Liver, Kidneys and Corneas, which were transported to deserving patients across the city. Airport and Traffic Authorities of both cities came together, to swiftly lay the Green Corridor between Surat and Mumbai for the transportation of the heart. Roadmap and flight map was immediately put in place and the donor heart left Mahavir Hospital, Surat at 12.38AM reaching Surat Airport at 12.50AM. Upon being transferred into a chartered flight that took off at 12.57AM, landing at Mumbai Airport at 01.35AM, heading out in the stand-by ambulance at 01.39AM. The Green Corridor from Domestic Airport (Gate No. 8) to Military Road – Santacruz-Chembur Link Road - Chedda Nagar to Eastern Express Highway - Airoli Junction and finally to Fortis Hospital, Mulund, helped the heart reach Fortis Hospital Mulund at into the OT at 01.57AM.
