single Knee Ligament Reconstruction Surgery
-- Knee and all ligaments were completely damaged; patient had lost hope of walking again
but resumed normal activities after six weeks of surgery --
Chandigarh, March 4, 2022: The Orthopaedics Team at Fortis Hospital Mohali recently successfully operated on a 58-year-old patient suffering from a multiple ligament knee injury – Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) Posterolateral corner (PLC), Ligamentum Patellae and Common Peroneal Nerve Injury (CPNI) . Patient Ganesh Yadav, had dislocated his knee and injured all major ligaments following a road accident and had been rendered wheelchair-bound for eight months.
The team of doctors led by Dr Ravi Gupta, Director of Orthopaedics (Sports Medicine), Fortis Hospital Mohali, successfully conducted a Multi Ligament Knee Reconstruction Surgery on Patient Ganesh Yadav on 8th November, 2021. All injured ligaments of his knee were reconstructed in one single surgery. They used a special technique to reconstruct the PCL by using a Preserved Insertion Hamstring Tendon Graft. In this special surgical technique invented by Dr Gupta, the attachment of tendons to bone is preserved which retains blood supply and nerve supply to the reconstructed ligament.
Preserved Insertion technique has been well accepted worldwide and featured in one of the best medical journals published from North America.
At admission, Patient Ganesh Yadav was having grossly unstable knee with due to breakage of all major ligaments in the knee – Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL), Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) Posterolateral corner (PLC), Ligamentum Patellae and Common Peroneal Nerve Injury (CPNI) – had been damaged. Due to injury of his nerve, leading to Foot Drop – there was inability to raise the front part of foot. The Patient had lost all hope of ever walking again in his life.
Dr Gupta successfully reconstructed Patient Ganesh Yadav’s all knee ligaments during a two-hour surgery on 8th November, 2021 and also released the nerve from the scar tissue. His ligamentum patellae was also repaired.
Following surgery and good rehabilitation at Fortis Hospital Mohali, the Patient had a quick recovery and was discharged on the second day of the surgery. At six weeks, the Patient had started walking without any support and was able to resume his daily activities with ease.
Discussing the case, Dr Gupta, said, “Patient Ganesh Yadav was unable to walk as all his knee ligaments and the main nerve of lifting the foot were injured. Usually such multiple knee ligaments are reconstructed in staged surgeries, but, we were able to do that in a single surgery. He underwent a successful Knee Ligament Reconstruction Surgery and made a swift recovery. He was able to resume his activities of daily living within six weeks of the surgery.”
