Fortis Gurugram successfully treats 64-year-old Somalian patient with rare lung tumour - english
Gurugram, 31 January 2023: Doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Institute successfully treated a 64-year-old female Somalian patient with rare lung tumor. The patient was presented to the hospital with breathlessness and difficulty walking long distances. Medical examination - Chest Xray Cect and ultrasound guided biopsy revealed a pleural fibrous tumour (a rare primary tumor). So far, approximately 800 cases of primary tumor have been reported across the world.
Ateam of doctors led by Dr Narendra Agarwal, (Thoracic Surgeon, Oncology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute), Dr Saurabh Kumar (Additional Director and Head Interventional Radiology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute), Dr Manoj Goel (Director & HOD - Pulmonology, Pulmonary Critical Care & Sleep Medicine, Fortis Memorial Research Institute) successfully treated the patient.
Upon admission to the hospital, the patient was examined and it was found that she was diabetic and hypertensive. A pre-operative embolization was done to achieve devascularization of the tumour (blood supply to the tumor was stopped) in order to reduce intra-operative blood loss and complications. The surgery was performed and a large tumour measuring 21*14*12 cms was extracted. The surgery lasted for 2 hours and the patient was discharged after 10 days.
Dr Narendra Agarwal, Thoracic Surgeon – Oncology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute said, “This was a case of complex and rare reported lung tumour in an elderly patient. Any delay in diagnosis and treatment would have led the tumour to invade heart blood vessels and the lung airway and further aggravated troubled breathing and could have led to fatality. These types of tumours are not so highly vascular; additionally, the origin of this tumour was diaphragmatic pleura which is very rare site for tumor presence/growth.”
Mahipal Singh Bhanot, Senior Vice President & Business Head, Fortis Memorial Research Institute said “This was a very challenging case, considering the age and co-morbidities of the patient. However, correct and timely diagnosis along with the right medical intervention by the team of doctors led by Dr Narendra Agarwal helped save the life of the patient.”
