Fortis Hospital, Anandapur celebrates “Spirit of Life” on the occasion of World Kidney Day
On the occasion of World Kidney Day, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur today celebrated one year of completion of the Kidney Transplant Program for Children who have been suffering from chronic kidney disease. Fortis has set a new benchmark this year with 4 Complicated Paediatric Kidney transplants conducted successfully. The occasion was celebrated with great fun and frolic by the consultants of the Fortis along with the children who underwent Kidney Transplant.
Megha Banerjee, Nayara Rehman, Shayak Chatterjee and Rudra Mishra were all six year olds last year when the surgeries were conducted on them by the transplant team led by Dr. Shivaji Basu, Dr. Sanjay Gogoi and Dr. Sasanka Sekhar Saha aptly supported by anaesthetist Dr. Paramita Trivedi and paediatric intensivist Dr. Agni Sekhar Saha. The medical part was looked after by our paediatric nephrologist Dr Rajiv Sinha.
All these children were suffering from End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) when they were brought to Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, by their distraught parents. What made the cases more critical was the fact that all these patients weighed well below 15 kgs, and they needed immediate kidney transplant. In India, most centres prefer to transplant at least over 20 kg weight and 15 kg of body weight is the usual cut off. But all that is history, its almost a year now and those kids are living a normal life just like any other kid in school with them.
“Fortis Hospital, Anandapur has been actively involved with adult kidney transplantation and has established itself as a leading center in Eastern India. Last year, it started Paediatric Renal Transplantation program and is one of the first hospitals to offer this rare service in Eastern India and moreover successfully helping 4 kids through complicated surgical procedures to live their life anew. Transplantation in children less than 15 kg body weight is a major surgical and medical challenge even in western world and in India this service is not offered in most hospitals,” said Dr. Rajiv Sinha, Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist, Fortis Hospital.
The children and their parents were happy to be present and celebrate this day. “We were turned down by many hospitals because of the complications. We had exhausted our options even in Vellore. Now Shayak is leading a very normal life and we are so happy to see him like this,” expressed the grateful parents of Shayak Chatterjee.
“In the last two decades, transplantation science has advanced a lot and has become the principal goal in the management of children with ESRD. In an ideal scenario, pre-emptive kidney transplantation (i.e. transplantation before dialysis) is the gold standard as it gives superior patient and graft survival with minimal complications. Ever since the initiation of our paediatric transplantation program, we have tried to set the gold standard as our benchmark and the smiling faces of Megha, Nayara, Shayak and Rudra, are proof of our competent team of doctors and their efforts in making these cases successful,” said Ms. Richa S Deb Gupta, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Kolkata.
The children played games, displayed their talents in front of everyone today amidst all the fun and laughter.
“We want to spread awareness to dispel myths that come with Paediatric Kidney Transplants. With proper post surgical treatments and care these children are living life with the freedom to explore their options without limiting themselves in any way. We always wish them to live with a smile on their face,” said Dr. Shivaji Basu, Consultant Urologist, Fortis Hospital.
