Fortis Hospital, Noida conducts Swap Kidney Transplant between two couples to save the spouse’s lives

Fortis Hospital, Noida successfully conducted two kidney transplant surgeries between two couples from Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. One spouse from each pair donated a kidney to the other spouse. The surgical team was led by Dr. Manoj Singhal, Director, Department of Nephrology, and Dr. Dushyant Nadar, Additional Director, Urology and Kidney Transplantation, Fortis Hospital, NOIDA.

Suresh (name changed), aged 58, is a government employee from Madhya Pradesh received a kidney from Dharmendra (name changed), a 52 year old plastic bag contractor from Uttar Pradesh. Savita (name changed), a 50 year old homemaker, donated her kidney for Anita (name changed), a 48 old homemaker. The two couples, Savita & Suresh from Madhya Pradesh and Anita & Dharmendra from Uttar Pradesh, earlier registered themselves with the Kidney Transplant Programme at Fortis Hospital, NOIDA.

With the possibility of a Kidney swap, both the couples were brought together by the senior doctors in the Departments of Nephrology and Urology. Once they consented, all advised and processed investigations were done. After a thorough medical investigation and legal consent, the transplant between the couples was successfully done.

Dr Dushyant Nadar, Additional Director, Urology and Renal Transplant said, “When there is a mismatch between couples, one of the options is a swap transplant, which is quite a challenging operation to match right from medical grounds to the legal aspect. But the larger picture here is the fact that two couples who recognized the need, mutually, came forward to share what they could to save their respective spouse’s lives and that sets an example.”
