Fortis Jaipur performs knee replacement surgery on 97-yr-old Quit India Movement fighter via robot-aided surgery
Jaipur, XX January 2023: Doctors at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur successfully performed a knee
replacement surgery on a 97-year-old male patient via robotic-aided surgery, which is similar to
traditional knee replacement done with the assistance of a robotic arm. Patient’s right knee was
operated and replaced, almost three years after the left knee was operated and replaced in 2020 by Dr.
Anoop Jhurani, Director, Joint Replacement and Orthopaedics, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur. Patient
Pandit Ramkishan (born on 28th March 1926) is a Quit India Movement fighter and possibly world's
oldest water right agitator/activist.
With this surgery, the patient has applied for a Guinness World Record, for being the oldest person to
have undergone knee replacement surgery. It is to be noted that, prior to this, the Limca Book of
Records had recorded hockey player SN Bhatt as holding the world record for getting the knee
replacement (both the knees are replaced) at the age of 94. While a Yemeni citizen Ali Salih Hussain got
one of his knees replaced at the age of 98, so Ramkishan would be the first for having both knees
replaced at the age of 97.
Giving details of the unique case, Dr. Anoop Jhurani, Director, Joint Replacement and Orthopaedics,
Fortis Escorts Hospital, Jaipur, said, “Pandit Ramkishan's case was different as knee replacements at this
age are complex and rare. A very detailed and intricate line of treatment was adopted in this particular
case, thus we opted for robotic-aided surgery, as traditional surgery approach might have led to nerve
damage, blood clot, infection or an allergic reaction to the artificial joints. The patient underwent right
knee placement three years prior. He got his first surgery done at 94, and was planning replacement of
second knee but due to the Covid 19 pandemic and also owing to the untimely demise of his son Shishir
Kumar, he lost interest. But, his determination as a water agitator/activist to get water in his village,
motivated him to get his knee replaced so that he could go to the people to mobilise public opinion on
availability of water.”
Mr. Neerav Bansal, Zonal Director, Fortis Escorts Hospital Jaipur said, “We’re proud to have
accomplished this rare clinical case successfully with the help of robotic-aided surgery. It is to be noted
that Fortis is the only hospital in Rajasthan conducting robotic aided Total Knee Replacement (TKR), as
without this modern and advanced technology, this surgery would have been difficult and complicated to
perform. I would like to congratulate Dr. Anoop Jhurani and his team for having conducted the surgery
smoothly.”
