Surat man saves a Punekar in city’s 42nd Heart Transplant conducted within 48hrs

Team of doctors from Fortis Hospital, Mulund successfully transplanted a heart to save the life of a 36yr old male, today. Perfect synchronization between Clinicians, Medical Social Workers and Nursing Teams in Surat and Mumbai, enabled this 12th interstate heart transplant between Gujarat and Maharashtra. Retrieved by Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, Mulund, the donor heart was transported in 2hrs 2mins covering a distance of 278kms; marking 42nd Heart Transplant of the city. 

The recipient from Indapur, Pune was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy and had been waitlisted over a week ago; and was immediately put on the super emergency list. The donation became possible when a 48yr old male was declared brain dead at Bhurani Hospital, Surat, following an Intracranial Bleed. Following counselling to the family of the patient, they decided to donate his Heart, Liver, Kidneys and Corneas. The donor, who was employed in a private setup is survived by his wife and three children.

Upon counselling, the patient’s family consented for the donation, the heart was harvested, to be
transported to Mumbai. With perfect coordination of multiple key stakeholders, the harvested heart
was transferred out of Burhani Hospital, Surat at 02:36PM and transferred into a chopper that was
on stand-by, which took off at 03.04PM. The chopper landed in Mumbai at 04:16PM covering a
distance of 278Kms in 2hrs 2mins. In the final leg of the transfer, the live heart was transported in an
ambulance to reach Fortis Hospital, Mulund at 04:38 PM for an immediate transplant.

Speaking at the juncture of Mumbai’s record number of heart transplants, Dr Anvay Mulay said, “The surgery has been concluded and the recipient is now stable. We will continue to monitor him in the ICU for the next 48 to 72 hours. We were able to conduct this live saving surgery only because of the donor family, for whom we have the greatest appreciation and respect, for taking a decision to save lives at the time of grief & personal loss”. 

Talking about the surgery, Dr S Narayani, Zonal Director, Fortis Hospital, Mulund said, “Heart
Transplant now has become a real viable treatment option for patients with end-stage cardiac diseases,
who tend to otherwise have poor quality life surviving on medications. We extend our humble
appreciation to the donor family and to the teams of Transplant Coordinators, Physicians and Surgeons
who have helped us enrich these precious lives”.
